I have always been interested in the “spark of life”, but for the past few years I have become rather fascinated by an unusual and exotic substance more commonly known as ‘Ormus’. Ormus is a spin-off of an acronym that refers to a group of thirteen metals on the periodic table of elements that, under certain constraints, can supposedly go into a super-conductive state. It is in many circles, and ancient alchemical texts, believed to be the bridge between spirit and matter. Or, the ‘Prometheus Spark’ if you will. I find it appropriate to be delving myself into a character obsessed with unravelling the secret to human animation, and as I become more familiar with, Victor Frankenstein, I find myself feeling eerily connected…
Our first read through meeting was Saturday November 10, 2012.
Since we have people from Houston, Galveston, and Houston’s surrounding areas, even as far as College Station, working on the film, we always have to negotiate and compromise on our meeting places to be fair and satisfy everyone’s needs and schedules!
I am the photographer for the film, so I am keeping track of all the behind the scene’s adventures including what it takes to create an independent film (a lot of work). I am also collaborating with Peter, the camera man in charge of the documentary which will be about the process of making the film and who the people are that are working on this film.
A good bunch, but not everyone showed up for this read-through.
Not all but some tech were there including myself, Peter, and Judith- also the writer of the script and the one who has brought us all together. Also, MJ, the director and narrator at the moment, Dustin as Victor Frankenstein, Tim as Clerval, Matt as the Monster, Martha as Justine, Travis as Krempe, and Megan as the Maid.
The Monster
Victor Frankenstein
The Script: Written by Judith B. Shields, which is pretty close to the original text of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. Only some tweaks and twists have been added to fit criteria for the film contests (yes, this independent film will be entering a film competition!! And it has steampunk influences too!) and to match the actors and actresses personas and voices.
Alright that is all I have for now. Stay tuned because we just had another meeting and read-through last Friday which I will be blogging about!!

My 13-year-old Hi8 video camera won’t rewind anymore. I guess it’s decided to not look back anymore. Even camcorders get philosophical in old age.
I’m sorting through about 5 hours of raw footage in order to make a video of the read-through. Let the editing madness begin!
It’s about passion for fashion. These are not all the costumes, but just a handful. Elizabeth’s wedding dress will be kept under wraps until the film is released. The same will go for the monster’s look and costume.
In the world of Frankenstein’s Monster (2013), Victor’s obsession over Prometheus’ Spark, causes him to dive into multiple sciences. It is in his laboratory and through his creation that we will see steampunk elements shine. Some steampunk elements will not as obvious as others. Expect wood, metal, a claustrophobic environment, bronze, steam, symbolism, and other sciences represented.
A contrasting world will be created compared to Victor and his laboratory. The outside world exists in American Southern forests and nearby estuaries. It gives a feeling of isolation that matches Mary Shelley’s impressions. Women’s costumes will lean either Southern or Western. Most dresses will be either pastels or neutrals. Lots of frills. Some dresses with hoop skirts. All of the costumes are 19th Century.
Good news to share!
Unwoman, a genius in the steampunk music world, has granted us permission to use one of her songs as the background music in our promotional fundraising video! The song is called “Cruelty” and it’s a fantastic instrumental piece. It is number 2 in the link below. I encourage everyone to please support this generous artist.
We are pleased to announce that Preacher’s Powderworks & Projectiles from Austin, Texas will be designing Victor Frankenstein’s gear.
Big blessings! We have an audio studio! This will be very useful in post.
What for–sound effects, music recording and voice overs if necessary.
